If I had a wedding (Part 1)

I've heard many people ask, and I'm okay with the question. "What kind of wedding photographer doesn't have a wedding of her own?"

It's a legitimate question. The answer is quite simple. I didn't elope because I was cheap, pregnant, or drunk(i.e. Britney Spears). My elopement was more of a time issue. When Hank and I decided we were moving to New York, we had about 3 weeks to plan everything including finding a place to live, making travel arrangements, and planning our simple elopement in Central Park.

That being said, I can't say for sure that I would have had a wedding if time wouldn't have been an issue. I think it's just my  personality. I like to keep things simple. I turn beet red when the attention from a group of people big or small is on me. I much prefer to be a wallflower and observe others.

Now to the good stuff. Knowing what I know now, there are several things I would do if I was having a wedding myself. First and foremost, I would book my vendors. That way I would have an idea in my head about what I wanted and then could fill in details later. The venue is obviously the first thing I would worry about. Then I would book my photographer, florist, and band or DJ. Last, I would book my cake decorator, hair and makeup artists, and start dress shopping.

I grew up in the country and my preferred venue would be an old red barn with lots of rustic details. I think it's important when planning a wedding to make an inspiration board. Whether you do it via Pinterest or using Style Me Pretty's inspiration board maker, it's important to know what you like and what you don't like. That being said, it is important to use pinboards for inspiration only! Make your wedding your own. It will not mean as much to you if your ideas are directly copied from things you find online.  I strongly recommend finding things you like, and then adding your own creative twist.

The photos above are not my own and are a collection of photos taken by other photographers. This board was created using Style Me Pretty's inspiration board tool.
